Bedford - 411 km

Bedford has an ancient history, and one could prove that by visiting the town to witness the historic Mi’kmaq petroglyphs that historians say is 500 hundred or more years old.

The carved images of the graphs can be found on rock surfaces with a strange eight-pointed star that might refer to unity. However, no one’s sure why, how or what do these petroglyphs mean.

Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of Offa of Mercia. Offa was King of Mercia, a kingdom of Anglo-Saxon England, from 757 until his death in July 796.

Before arriving in Bedford we passed through Northampton, home of the world-famous Silverstone circuit and the birthplace of the British shoemaking industry. Those keen on a west-end musical might be familiar with the musical Kinky Boots. This story is based on a real story of a traditional shoe maker in Northampton diversifying their business in order to make high quality shoes for drag queens in male sizes!
