Sheffield - 205 km
George Orwell, the novelist famous for writing Animal Farm and 1984, once said of the city: "Sheffield, I suppose, could justly claim to be called the ugliest town in the Old World” - a bit harsh, but a lot has changed since he wrote this unflattering review in 1937!
Known the world over as a Steel City, Sheffield was famed for its industry in the heyday of the 1900s and remains a city of innovation to this day.The steel for the Brooklyn Bridge in New York came from Sheffield! The steel industry in Sheffield might not be what it used to be. But, it’s still very vibrant and strong. So much so that Sheffield produces as much as half of the world’s surgical blades used in hospitals.
However the smoking chimney stacks are no more and instead we find a green, modern cityscape set against the stunning backdrop of the Peak District National Park.
Sheffield United is the world's oldest football team. The team was founded in 1857 and has won four FA cup titles in its reign.
